These marvelous inserts came inside the N.Y. Journal and Boston Sunday Globe newspapers, 1896-1905. Most measuring about 14” x 10”, they were meant to be cut out and made into mechanical toys for children (many are mechanical). Many are of the classic comic strip characters of the day are depicted. Comic scenes include The Katzenjammer Kids (2), Happy Hooligan with Alphonse and Gaston, Foxy Grandpa, Auto Race, Indians (2), Cinderella, George Washington, Little Dolly, Cake Walker (negro), Bird & Owl, Little Red Riding Hood (2), General Grant, Lincoln, Grant-Lincoln-Washington, Dutch Farm, Fire Fighters, Polar Expedition, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Bicycles, Alice in Wonderland, Bunker Hill, Teddy Roosevelt as a Rough Rider, Little Bo Peep, Swans, Rip Van Winkle, Sleeping Beauty, Clown & Dancing Bear and the Navy (2). There are also six postcard uncut sheets, eight partials (America’s Cup Defender and Santa Claus) and a few later pieces, total of over 60 pieces in a large black 17” x 14” folio. Many are glued in at the corners but the glue has weakened on many pages and they are easily removable (all are the lesser pieces in the collection). Handwritten notes from legendary hobbyist Woody Gelman (published of the American Card Catalogue) are at the top of some pages. The condition is overall EX.
