Lot 1766: Rare “Between The Acts” card of Negro Pedestrian Hart

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $1,053.87
Price Realized: $1,259.38
Auction Date:12/15/2006 9:00 PM EST

Extremely rare, possibly one of a kind “Between the Acts” tobacco card of famous negro Pedestrian Hart. These “Between the Acts” brand cards are some of the earliest known American Tobacco cards, dating from about 1880. This may very well be the first negro athlete pictured on any tobacco card, and significant as such. The front of the card, while centered to the extreme right has only a touch of corner wear and no creases. There is some faint brown staining on the reverse near the top and bottom, likely residue from the glue that once held this piece in place inside of a Victorian era scrapbook. A rare opportunity indeed.
