Lot 1317: James Braddock Collection of Personal Effects

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid: $359.89
Price Realized: $430.07
Auction Date:12/15/2006 9:00 PM EST

Buried in a Phillies cigar box are boxing champ J.J. Braddock’s personal effects, a collection as dramatic as portrayed in Ron Howard bio pic, “Cinderella Man,” but these items are the real thing, some randomly intimate - a nail file, thimble, fountain pen, and a Packard dealership business card, yet most are quite theatrical, fight-themed, and personal - a Hay diet pocket guide, prayer card, silver cross, St. Christopher pendant, well-wishing postcards, and two typewritten letters to “Jim,” one from March 12, 1930 with lots of fight talk (“I rather think you will get Loughran at Philly”), and another from John King, dated August 9th, 1936, figuring Braddock’s chances against “Der Max” Schmeling, before that fight was cancelled for the more lucrative, and less controversial, bout with Joe Louis. Also includes a little black memo book with financial entries such as “1,000 from garden,” “$775 to Joe,” and “870 Joe got.”
