Lot 1127: 19th Century Billy Sunday Baseball Postcard
ITEM DESCRIPTION
At the height of his career, the fleet-footed Sunday (who had just stolen 84 bases in 1890) quit baseball to enter Christian work. From beginnings as a YMCA secretary, he rose to fame as a fiery evangelist, spearheading the Prohibitionist movement and attempting to outlaw Sunday baseball. Offered is a scarcely seen 3.5”x5.5” photo postcard of Billy posed, bat in hand, donning his Pittsburgh uniform. Lightly and evenly toned surfaces are free of blemishes, and the verso is unwritten. VG-EX.
