Lot 1116: 1860s Spruce Gum Baseball Box Lid
ITEM DESCRIPTION
From the earliest days of our nation’s baseball culture, this wickedly aged wood lid to an 1860’s Spruce Gum box pre-dates Topps’ chewing gum offerings by 80 years. Illustrates a pre-1870’s underhanded pitcher, with a printed introduction beginning, “This Gum, in its crude state, as gathered from the immense Spruce forests surrounding the lakes in the northern section of the state of Maine…” A beautiful vintage look, this item comes from an early baseball collection. Measures 4 ½ x 7”, and is encased. LOA.
