Lot 1120: Two 19th Century Baseball Books

Two humble treasures from the 19th Century, these two hardcover books contain baseball sections or themes, each geared for children. 1) “Popular Pastimes for Field and Fireside, or Amusements for Young and Old” (5 ¼ x 7 ¾”), contains a chapter on baseball, its rules, players, and field dimensions. “Carefully compiled” by Aunt Carrie and copy written in 1866, its blue cover and spine are faded, edges worn down, and binding secure. 2) “Schoolboys of Rookesbury: or, the Boys of the Fourth Form” (6 ¾ x 8 ¾”), edited by Laurence H. Francis, presents a beautiful cover illustration of schoolboy with ball in hand, and boasts terrific illustrations throughout, but has very delicate binding, as well as a loose cover and spine.
