Lot 1710: Napoleon Bronze Death Mask
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
UPDATE: We have added an image (front and back) of this death mask from a vintage
1933 wire photo. It shows this same death mask (different specimen) being shown by Barbara Wendell of the Chicago Historical Society where it was on display.
The finest piece in The Weiner Collection. There are other versions
of this mask; however, this one is the ultimate. Bronze sculpture measures
13x5x7.5". Engraved on both sides of the base is the mark of the bronze
maker, "Fondu Par L. Richard Ft Quesnel A Paris...Dr. F. Antommarchi." At
the bottom, is a raised medallion with the image of Napoleon. It reads,
"Napoleon Emp Et Roi Souscription Dr Antommarchi 1833". Dr. Francesco
Antommarchi served as the deposed emperor's personal physician and constant companion during the last two years of Napoleon's life. Some believe it was the surgeon Francis Burton of Britain's Sixty-Sixth Regiment at St. Helena who made the so called "parent mold". Regardless, the beauty of this piece is unparalleled. And the irony is there is no other Napoleonic piece extant that brings the Emperor more to life than this. Note: The lot comes with a copy of the book The Story of the Napoleon's Death Mask by G.L. De St. Watson (1915). This is the British 1st edition limited to 500 copies.
