As the 2005 regular season came to a close the Giants found themselves fighting for a spot in the post-season. Fourteen days separated the Giants from a long cold winter and every game from there on would have a unique play-off-type atmosphere. Their most dangerous weapon, Barry Bonds, who had been sidelined for most of the year as he recovered from multiple knee surgeries and was still struggled to regain his feared swing, but as all of the truly great players due he would rise to the occasion.
September 18th brought the Dodgers into town along with another opportunity to close the gap in the standings. After five innings San Francisco was clung to a single run lead and was desperate for insurance as the bulk of the Dodger line-up was due shortly. Out of the dugout Barry stepped as the crowd exploded at the sight of their hero to start the inning. Awaiting him was the former World Series MVP and the youngster had plans of his own. Bonds dug his cleats in and the battle began. Brad Penny was throwing everything he had at him but the veteran, despite not being 100%, wouldn't bite. Patiently he worked the count to full and on the next pitch it happened. Bonds connected on the fast ball he had forced Brad Penny to throw and sent it skyward towards McCovey Bay. At that same moment our consignor, who had been paddleboarding those very waters, spotted the sphere. Chants of "Barry" filled the air as he rounded the bases as the began its decent. Kayakers scrambled, trying to position themselves for the catch but fate would position our guy just ten feet from where the ball touched down. He quickly erased that distance between the two of them to bring you the ball you see before you today...........#705.
The Official Major League (Selig) baseball is among the most rare of its kind, one of the only members of the revered "700 Club". Few like it, belonging to either Aaron or Ruth, has ever surfaced before in the past and only a handful may ever even gain such status in the future. Its position as Homerun #705 adds to its signifigance, placing it just ten spots away from passing Babe Ruth's mark of 714! A collector's dream come true and surely to become one of the most storied baseballs in the game's story. Comes with an LOA from the gentleman who retrieved the ball and an article of the day's events.
