Lot 124: Pumpsie Green Breaks the Red Sox Color Line (1959)
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Amazing image of Elijah "Pumpsie" Green who is joined by Ted Williams on the day he broke the Boston Red Sox color line. The Red Sox were the last major league team to have a “negro” on the team (as he is described in the caption). This overt racism was to be a significant part of the Tom Yawkey legacy and cost the Red Sox their previous competitive elitism. Front caption. NRMT. 8x10”.
