Lot 1588: Hugh Casey Signed George Burke Photo (4x6")
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Hugh Casey enjoyed a successful nine year career as a major league pitcher. He won fifteen games for the ’39 Dodgers and had a .641 career winning percentage. His final year was 1949 with the Yankees. Like many people, though, he had a more troubled side. On July 3rd, 1951 he was on the phone with his wife from a hotel room in Atlanta GA. His wife heard the phone go silent and moments later heard a gunshot. Her husband had committed suicide at the age of 38. For that unfortunate reason, his autograph is extremely scarce. Offered here is a 4x6” George Burke photo which has been signed in blue ink, “To my good friend “Nellie” Mungo-Hugh Casey”. The inscription is strong from start to finish, with perfect form and fluidity, a “10” out of possible “10”. LOA.
