ITEM DESCRIPTION

Ladies, put on your big hats, as everyone gets out their wallets to bet on horse racing’s biggest race, The Kentucky Derby. A tremendous collection of Derby Day images, most measuring an average 8x10”, concentrating almost fully on the monumental crowds, and of the races leading up to the actual Kentucky Derby. With the bulk of these wire photos taken during the 1940’s (there are some from the 50’s), the two highlights are of a 1934 stable fire on the eve of the Derby, and a 1935 shot of Omaha winning the Kentucky Derby, a trail of horses behind him, the first leg of his eventual Triple Crown accomplishment, only the third horse ever (at that time) to do so. Also includes a 1938 large negative of Kentucky Derby crowds. Production notes, paper captions, Examiner and International News stamps appear on verso, while some typed captions are present on front. Most are in EX condition, with the occasional stain showing up on an image.
