Lot 77: Incredible Buddy Myer at Griffith Stadium (1936)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid: $359.89
Price Realized: $430.07
Auction Date:8/28/2006 9:00 PM EST

UPDATE: The name in the title should read “Buddy Myer” and not “Chief Meyers” as in the printed catalog.
One of the finest baseball images in the collection. Spectacular oversized, nearly panoramic image of the batting champion of 1935 being honored before the Senators game against the Red Sox (he was presented a “$500 diamond ring.”). Dressed in Senators whites and war bonnet, Myer is surrounded by Navajos tribesmen who have done a dance around him. The pride he wears on his face is as unmistakable as his dress. The stadium background is breathtaking and his purely Native American look while wearing baseball uniform causes double and triple takes. Stunning EX-MT condition. Original paper caption and International News stamp on verso. EX-MT. 7.5x11.5”.
