In 1966-67, Toronto was icing a veteran team. Johnny Bower was 42 and Terry Sawchuk, 37. Defenseman Tim Horton was 37; Allan Stanley was 41 while Marcel Pronovost was 36. Up front, George Armstrong was 36. Red was 39. The team was tagged the ‘Over the Hill Gang’, but that’s not to say they were completely devoid of like or young talent. Twenty-four year old Pete Stemkowski provided instant energy and was a constant scoring threat throughout the season. When playoff time arrived the Leafs found themselves with 75 points and in third place, well behind first place Chicago with 94 points and narrowly edged by Canadiens with 77. In the first round of the playoffs, the Leafs knocked off the favored Hawks four games to two, setting up a Centennial spotlight versus Montreal. Canada was celebrating its one-hundredth birthday, and with the only two Canadian teams in the NHL, it was great for the country. The series took six games, but when the dust cleared, it was the surprising Toronto Maple Leafs who carried away the Stanley Cup. Presented is Pete Stemkowski’s personal player Stanley Cup Trophy. Silver plated, it measures 13” in height and approximately 18” in circumference at base. There is moderate tarnishing throughout the body of the trophy and the base has been repainted, neither though detracts from the prestige of such a rare treasure, the first personal-style Stanley Cup we have ever auctioned from the famous 1966-67 Leaf squad. LOA.
