Lot 370: 1926 Ty Cobb Photo
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Baseball legend Ty Cobb’s last year with the Detroit Tigers was 1926, when a gambling scandal darkened the managing centerfielder’s reputation and pressured American League president Ban Johnson to ask our aging Georgia Peach to quit. This (EX)1926 medium shot of Cobb measures 5 x 7, and, though a bit light, holds a fine image of the batting champ, whose intimidating squint pierces out from his shadowed brow, and whose tattered Detroit “D” is front and center, literally a remnant of that time. Back of photo contains some pencil marks, an “International” wire photo stamping, and thin white sticker with “Ty Cobb, Detroit outfield, 1926.” Present is a near invisible crease across Cobb's chest, a few cracks at bottom, and tear on bottom left.
