Wow, this is a killer. The finest Jack Johnson wire photograph we have seen, dated July 29, 1920, is a first generation original of Johnson surrendering himself to the authorities. Original paper caption on back reads, "Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion of the world, who has been sought for some time on a charge of white slavery, entered the U.S. at Tia Juana, Cal., and surrendered himself as a fugitive from justice to George R. Cooley, U.S. Marshall." Magnificent image from Underwood & Underwood this piece's image is perfect, measuring 6 1/8 x 8 ½”. Overall EX-MT. He would serve a tragic, life altering year in Leavenworth for his laughable violation of the Mann Act of 1910, a bill whose interpretation was so grossly misused that it led to many states banning any consensual sex outside of marriage. Johnson was convicted of “white slavery” when he transported his future wife, Lucille Cameron (who was white), across the state line for “immoral purposes.” That racism played a large part in this debacle, made his conviction especially offensive. An historic event caught on film.
