Lot 1080: Fantastic New England Carved Folk Art Hall Chandelier

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,000.00
Winning Bid: $983.26
Price Realized: $1,175.00
Auction Date:4/28/2006 9:00 PM EST

Fresh from long storage in the basement of a turn of the Century oceanfront mansion north of Boston, is this spectacular center hall chandelier. One could smell the salt air and hear the chants of the whale fleet setting out to sea. The fixture is three sided and heavily carved with bear chested buxom sea nymphs, gargoyles and griffen heads. The lamp is electrified with light emitted through three panes of clear textured glass. There is a light coat of gesso over the entire piece with 99% or more of the original paint finish intact. Measures 45"L X 20"W. There are a few pieces of the griffens wings missing but can be easily restored and does not affect the overall beauty of the piece. The original hanging chain and clothe electric wire (should be rewired for safety) are present. A very important piece of American Folk Art.
