Lot 1078: Earliest Printings of the Declaration of Independence and The U.S. Constitution (1776 & 1787)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,000.00
Winning Bid: $1,081.59
Price Realized: $1,292.50
Auction Date:4/28/2006 9:00 PM EST

Three early issues of the rare and desirable The Westminster Magazine, London; both are extremely important historical publications. The first, dated August, 1776, contains the printed text of the Declaration of Independence; the second item, containing both November and December, 1787, features the text of the U.S. Constitution in two parts. Both items are filled with period articles, essays, travelogues, criticism and reviews, illustrations, news from the "Colonies" and poetry. It is extremely interesting to see these U.S. documents in such rich historical context, and the Declaration is among the first copy to be printed in England. Both items measure 8 1/2" x 5", with 55 pp (1776), 190 pp (1787) and have been removed from a bound volume. The 1776 is missing the famous "War Map" of North America. Otherwise, remarkably well-preserved, with no significant tears or creases, no soiling or water damage, and little if any foxing.
