Lot 443: Watch Presented to Harry Craft by Joe DiMaggio
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Harry Craft was a great fielder, and a so-so hitter, who made his biggest mark as a manager, but not in the Majors, where his record was really not all that impressive. Perhaps his biggest impact was felt by those who played under him. He managed a young Roger Maris on the Kansas City teams in 1958 and '59, before he was traded to the Yankees. Maris credited Craft as an early help with his hitting. When Craft managed in the Yankees farm system, Mantle had started his baseball career under Craft. He was Mantle's manager in the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League and then again in the Western Association. Those were Mantle's very first years. "I was lucky to have Harry as skipper my first two years," Mantle said years later. "He started me out right." Watch is an Impala by Aureola that according to its face has an "Unbreakable Mainspring." Back of watch reads "18K" and "To Harry Best Wishes Joe DiMaggio." Watch is EX-MT.
