A stunning vintage advertising lithograph from high-wheel bicycle manufacturer H.B. Smith Machine Works, Smithville, Burlington Co., New Jersey, and printed by W.H. Butler, Agt. Lith. Philadelphia. W.B. Smith founded his company in 1847 and moved from Massachusetts to New Jersey in 1865. The company held numerous patents for woodworking machinery, as well as for a variety of bicycles and tricycles. The "Star" high-wheel bicycle, illustrated in this wonderful advertising poster, was produced in the 1880's, with patent dates from 1880-1884. A clever shock absorbing system eased the discomfort of its solid rubber tires. The smaller front wheel was used for steering, with the 52" - 55" rear wheel providing traction; an innovative clutch system allowed two forward speeds. This advertising poster is both beautiful and historically significant. In the center, the text brackets a wonderful image of the Machine Works, complete with horse-drawn carriage and steam locomotive winding through the countryside in the background. Surrounding the center, eleven colorful panels illustrate the practical uses and many tricks that would make a high-wheel bicycle an intelligent and entertaining purchase. Image size is 18 1/4" x 23 1/2", and is framed under glass, with a framed size of 24" x 29". Although the frame has a few light scratches and minor scuffs, condition of the poster is Near-Mint or better, nearly flawless in all respects.
