Lot 384: Circa 1917 Ty Cobb Game Bat

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Price Realized: $7,375.30
Auction Date:4/28/2006 9:00 PM EST

Merlin’s magic wand, John Henry’s sledgehammer, Ty Cobb’s bat. Game marvel whose markings date it definitively from the 1917 era. This wartime lumber is embossed with the logo of the “Clark C. Griffith Ball and Bat Fund.” These bats of identical specs as the major leaguers were sent overseas for the men in uniform (military uniform that is). This one is Ty Cobb all the way. From its significant 38 ounces ballast to its slender 35 inch length. The lovely wood grain is quite tight making it purely major league quality (yes it is “good wood”). This is a beautiful hand-turned Hillerich and Bradsby 125 with the dash dot dash pattern underneath. A Trade Mark “Ty Cobb,” his script signature laces the barrel. Fine use, it is uncracked and literally covered with ball marks. Brilliant condition, it is identical to a Cobb gamer, but may have seen more action in France then in Detroit.
