Tobacco manufacturers slipped cards into cigarette packs as early as 1875. At their height of popularity in the first three decades of the 20th century, most cigarette companies employed this tactic. Their purpose was twofold: to protect the cigarettes by stiffening the pack and also to give smokers another reason to choose their brands by making them want to own all of the different cards. The cards depicted many things but primarily actors and athletes. The practice finally died out in the 1950’s. We offer here four separate British collections. Two are from W.A. & A.C. Churchman (issued by the Imperial Tobacco Co. of Great Britain and Ireland, LTD.). One of these is titled “Prominent Golfers,” issued in 1931. It is a near set with 46 out of the complete series of 50. On the front of each is a caricature of a big name golfer of the day. The reverse has bios of the golfers. Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and Gene Sarazen all appear here. The second Churchman group is titled “Sporting Celebrities” which was also issued in 1931. It is a totally complete set, containing all 50 cards. Highlights include: Tommy Armour, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling and Walter Hagen. Our third set is from Lambert & Butler. It is called Who’s Who In Sport (1926) and the entire set of 50 is all present. The fronts of these cards are b + w photos, some showing the athletes in action. Some of the big names are: Gene Tunney, Gertrude Ederle, Rene Lacoste and Bobby Jones. The fourth grouping, from J.A. Pattreiquex Manchester, is entitled “Celebrities In Sport.” This too is a complete set of 50. On the front of each card is a depiction of athlete in action. Above is a head shot portrait. Celebs include: Bill Tilden, Gene Tunney, Gertrude Ederle and the ever present Bobby Jones. All cards are 1-3/8 X 2-1/8”.
