ITEM DESCRIPTION

John Dillinger emerged from 8 1/2 years in prison an enraged and bitter man. His partner in the botched holdup had served less than two years, and Dillinger wanted to make up for lost time. Thus began a crime spree that terrorized the Midwest from September, 1933 to July, 1934, leaving ten people dead, including a sheriff, and many more wounded. Dillinger twice escaped from jail, and frequently evaded police by the skin of his teeth. His cocky attitude, and a passion for robbing very unpopular banks and police arsenals, while leaving law enforcement baffled and confused, created a Depression era “Robin’ Hood” type character. Widely reported by local and national news services, his activities were followed by millions every day. And, just like in the movies, Dillinger died in a hail of bullets, betrayed by a girlfriend. Here, magnificently created in Philadelphia in the 1930s for a wax museum exhibit, are Dillinger’s life-size “death mask” and hands. Dillinger is smiling slightly, with a haunted look, and you can almost imagine him squeezing the trigger of his automatic. Condition is NRMT, with the only defect a chip off the extreme lower left corner of the neck, largely out of sight.
