Ward drew girls. That’s what he always liked to do, and it’s what he did best. That desire in combination with his artistic prowess propelled him to the top of the comic book world but then, like so many of his era, he was drafted. In his spare time he continued to draw. A naval officer noticed his work and suggested he do a strip for the base paper and he created Ack-Ack Amy, who eventually evolved into his best known character, Torchy, the daffy blonde bombshell. He eventually ended up at Cracked Magazine where he worked for many years. This is a very unusual piece for a Bill Ward because of the great size (18 X 22-1/2”) (Framed, 24-1/2 X 29-1/4”). The drawing, which appears to have been published, was purchased at the Atlantique City Antique Show many years ago. It shows a very leering photographer shooting a barely dressed sex goddess. In the background, a notice reading “Passport Photos Our Specialty” but we’re guessing you’ve never seen a passport photo quite like this.
