Lot 1677: New York City Subway Scene by Eston

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $294.98
Price Realized: $352.50
Auction Date:11/30/2005 9:00 PM EST

This oil on canvas painting depicts a typical moment in time on the New York City subway in the 1930s at an unknown stop. A man in a bright orange scarf and dark jacket reads the daily paper. In the background anonymous passengers prepare for the train to leave the station. Someone has dropped a dollar bill on the floor and so far there are no takers. Outside on the platform a man and woman have a conversation. The painting includes the artist’s signed last name, ‘Eston’, the month it was painted (February), and the year it was painted, 1939. The painting is 27 1/2 X 20 1/2 in a brown frame and was sold more than 20 years ago at the Brimfield Antique Show in Brimfield, Mass. Its condition is fair with noticable cracking in the oil paint in several areas. Portions at the picture’s bottom end appear to have slight oxidation and small slivers of canvas are visible.
