Lot 617: 1950-55 Phil Cavarretta Game Used Bat
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Before there was Mr. Cub, there was Phil Cavarretta. The sparkplug for a Cubs’ team that captured three pennants in 11 years, local boy Cavarretta played 19 seasons on the North Side and three more for the White Sox on the South Side of Chicago. Just like Cavarretta, this 35-inch bat is tough as nails, signed on the barrel in black Sharpie by ‘Philibuck’. The H&B model K55 has his number 44 in vintage black paint on the knob. It took a licking between 1950 and 1955, but didn’t crack, as Cavarretta was still a sharp contact hitter leading to deadwood on the back of the barrel. Cavarretta’s best campaign was in 1945, when he earned MVP honors for hitting .355 and leading the Cubs to their last World Series appearance.
