A real gem of Muggsy McGraw memorabilia, revealing the gruff McGraw’s soft spot for teaching the game even when he had more serious things on his mind. When he penned this letter dated May 11th, 1932 on stationery from the Drake Hotel in Chicago, McGraw was suffering from ill health, and on June 3rd he would step down from his three-decade reign of managing the Giants. But he still took time to respond to a letter asking for advice about the finer points of turning a twin-killing. “Dear Pop,” he began in a neat, precise hand, “I would say the best way to make a double play would be to pivot from the inside of the bag, that will get you away from the spikes and interference of the runner. Hoping this will answer [your] question, and wishing you good luck. I am yours truly, John J. McGraw.” Splendid, stately McGraw example is NRMT in black ink. Letter is on a folded sheet 7 x 10” when opened and VG-EX w/3 additional fold marks but notably light damage beyond mild darkening. McGraw would come out of retirement to manage the NL squad in the inaugural All-Star Game in Chicago a year later, and died February 25, 1934, thus the letter is a late-in-life McGraw bauble with marked value on many levels.
