Jacobus Franciscus “Jim” Thorpe, in his Native American, Wa-Tho-Huk, is probably the most versatile athlete in modern sports history. He won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, starred in college and professional football, and played Major League Baseball. In the 1912 Olympics, in addition to winning the pentathlon and decathlon, Thorpe got a Bronze in the Javelin, placed fourth in the High Jump, and seventh in the Long Jump. We don’t know for sure but legend has it that when Gustav V of Sweden presented Thorpe a special prize he said “You sir, are the greatest athlete in the world,” to which Thorpe supposedly replied, “Thanks, King.” This one is special. The only signature model game used Thorpe bat known to exist!!! At 35-3/8” in length and weighing 2 lbs 9.2 oz. it is an impressive piece of lumber. It’s a Louisville Slugger with 2-1/4” of black tape where Thorpe’s hands gripped it. The barrel has the Jim Thorpe signature inscribed over the words “Trade Mark.” Great patina. Uncracked but has two nails in barrel. Obtained from Jim Thorpe by the original owner. Letter from the family of the original owner. One of the rarest and best bats in the hobby.
