Lot 1039: 1978 Pete Rose 44 Game Hitting Streak Bat

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,000.00
Winning Bid: $4,215.41
Price Realized: $5,037.42
Auction Date:11/30/2005 9:00 PM EST

On August 1, 1978 Pete Rose was chasing Joe DiMaggio and immortality when he took his forty four game hitting streak against the Braves. The streak came to end when Gene Garber struck Rose out in the ninth inning. The competitive Rose was sour after the game, blasting Garber and the Braves for not challenging him with fastballs. This is a very special Rose bat (34-3/4”) as this was used by him in that game. Judging by the use on this bat (pounded with ball marks on both sides of the barrel) it was used to get a few of those hits during the streak. Obtained right after the game from Pete, it is signed “To Dana Good Luck Always, Pete Rose 8-1-78.” Below, and not in Rose’s hand, is written in the same black marker, “Bat used during 44 game hitting steak, ended Atlanta, Georgia.” Uncracked, with “14” and “g,” probably for game, on the knob. One of the finest and most significant Pete Rose bats around.
