Sock it to me? From famed newspaper writer Jim Murray comes this collection of Richard Nixon memorabilia. On February 20, 1953, when Nixon was Vice President under Eisenhower, he typed this letter and signed it. It was mailed (the envelope is also here) to Murray on official stationery in regards to a membership card to the “Order of the Hound’s Tooth.” On September 18, 1952, the front page of the “New York Post” ran the headline: “Secret Nixon Fund!” The story stated that Nixon had established a “millionaire’s club” to help pay his political expenses. Republican presidential candidate Eisenhower told the press that the Republican campaign must be “CLEAN AS A HOUND’S TOOTH.” In his September 23rd speech, Nixon gave the nation a detailed report of his financial history, everything from the mortgage on his house to the one political gift he said he intended to keep, a cocker spaniel his daughters named “Checkers.” Nixon effectively refuted the charge that he used the fund to live a life of luxury. The “ORDER OF THE HOUND’S TOOTH” was formed by members of his campaign after the speech. This collection also includes a Telex from ”Laybourne NewYork” to “Williamson, Bevedit,” regarding some space for a reporter on a train from Pomona to Seattle. There is also a Western Union telegram on the same topic. The final piece is a B + W photo (13 X 9”) of Nixon with Murray in a casual moment, framed (17-1/4 X 13”), and in EX-MT condition.
