Looking more like a Texas oil baron than a Brooklyn baseball baron, Dodger owner Charles Ebbets was caught on camera by the Bain News Service after testifying at the “1919 Black Sox” trial in Chicago. In the picture, dated October 18, 1920, Ebbets smiles broadly amid a crowd of bowler-hatted spectators outside the courthouse. He had reason to smile, as his Dodgers had just won the World Series, and was the perfect witness to testify about the game’s honest side as one of its most distinguished execs. 5 x 6.5” photo reads “Chas. Ebbets” handwritten on top with the editorial marking “3159-8” in black pen. Back has a typed “Chas. Ebbets testifying in basball [sic] scandal” and bears the Bain stamp. VG-EX with a small piece of the upper right corner torn off and mild damage at 2 other corners barely affecting the image.
