Lot 637: 1958 Red Schoendienst World Series Game Bat (35”)
ITEM DESCRIPTION
The Redhead’s lumber from the ‘58 Series, in which he hit an even .300 (9 for 30) in the Braves’ oh-so-close shot at taking down the mighty Yankees for the second straight October, when they failed to close the deal after taking a 3-to-1 game advantage. For the Braves, acquiring Shoendienst in a mid-season trade the year before from the Giants was the last link to title elevation, though injuries held the the slick fielding second sacker to only 106 games and a .262 average in ‘58. He would then stage a miraculous return from tuberculosis that cost him part of a lung and nearly 2 seasons, and hit over .300 twice more before beginning a sterling managing career. Louisville Slugger is a specially personalized number, engraved with “World Series 1958, Milwaukee Braves” and his scripted signature. Kettle-handle bat shows light if any use and a gorgeous light coffee color. Bat came directly from Red.
