Lot 786: Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball
ITEM DESCRIPTION

This wondrous Official American League baseball bears the lordly signatures of Ruth and Gehrig a mere inch away from each other, which was a good deal closer than these two Godheads ever came in real life. Despite their “feud,” Babe and Lou always knew the power of their presence, thereby explaning why they put aside their personal differences long enough to go out on public appearances together and even star in a movie. As the passage of time has proven, they were quite prescient in anticipating the hold they would have on future generations, as signed Ruth-Gehrig balls are the creme de la creme of the collectibles market, every reason why we’re so tickled to be able to offer several of these gems in this auction. This ball really looks the part, too, technically VG, but having toned beautifully and evenly with its red and blue laces tight as can be. The black fountain pen signatures -- Babe’s on the sweet spot, seemingly his personal domain by default on all balls he signed, and Lou’s a few inches away, high on a side panel -- contrast nicely against the hide, and grade an enviable EX. There appears to have been some additional writing on the ball at one time, but that ink has long since faded and is now barely detectable. The close placement of the names of Babe and Lou makes this one perfect for display.
