Lot 382: The Making of a Rawlings Bat Display

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $1,804.05
Price Realized: $2,155.84
Auction Date:11/27/2005 9:00 PM EST

Bats don’t grow in nature so some work is necessary to turn a tree into a bat. Five part display shows the evolution. Starts with a Northern White Ash tree that is debarked, cut into sections, lathe-turned and cut to a uniform length of 37” and a diameter of 2 3/4”. After sanding it is flame treated, further hardening it. Wood filler is applied to the open pores of the wood giving it an attractive color. Finally, the stamping of the bat with code number on the knob and the application of the Rawlings/Adirondack trademark, followed by the personalization with player’s signature. Two coats of lacquer finish and a final inspection before releasing it to the players. Wooden piece in handsome red backed display.
(Estimate $500 - $1,000)
