Lot 313: Cardinals Equipment Trunk #11
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Steamer trunk used to haul equipment, uniforms, etc. on road trips is a unique and grittily authentic slice of Cardinals life – all the way back to the 1920s. Through the years, both at Sportsman’s Park and Busch Stadium, the trunk was an important team accessory, for storage and hauling equipment to spring training and on road trips, on trains, planes and buses. Red and black trunk is made of hard, tempered metal and stenciled with “St. Louis Cardinals” in gray lettering on the black metal frame on the top. On each side of the trunk is a stenciled on “11” in gray, not for a player but more likely the number of the trunk itself in the line of such trunks kept under the stands next to the Cardinals locker room. Also has pieces of adhesive tape across the front with notations handwritten in black marker reading “White Pants”. Measures 39” wide, 24” deep, 33” high. Transportable by wheels on the bottom. Trunk was obviously also thrown around in rough fashion, such as on and off planes, judging by the uniformly extensive damage that includes dents, paint loss and bits and pieces of the black outer frames cracked and reinforced with tape, some crisscrossing the front.
