Lot 144: “Slugger Bird” Solid Steel Stencil

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $841.61
Price Realized: $1,005.72
Auction Date:11/27/2005 9:00 PM EST

Of all the variations of the Cardinals redbird seen around Busch Stadium, perhaps the most popular is “Slugger Bird,” which made its first appearance on the sleeve of the 1956 Cardinals uniform. For many years, the centerfield batter’s-eye backdrop featured a colored gravel stenciled depiction of Slugger Bird in all his feathered glory in the background above the player. The rock was removed a few seasons ago to make room for the Club, but the stencil responsible for the batting bird’s image remained stored in the alleyway behind the centerfield wall. The circular stencil is 146” is diameter and made of solid steel, and would be absolutely ideal for stadium or amusement park applications by way of preserving and honoring one of the most cherished symbols of the Cardinals’ legacy at two Busch Stadiums. Stencil is in G condition with some rusting but will imprint the bird in an appropriate surface without a hitch.
(Estimate $500 - $1,000)
