Here is one of the finest vintage photographs ever of the kid from Donora, Pennsylvania who became “The Man” in St. Louis. Stan Musial’s warm smile and engaging personality spill off the image of him easily gripping a bat in his Cardinals’ uniform, seemingly aware that he owned the town as surely as he owned National League pitchers from 1941 to 1963. Though he retired three years before the second Busch Stadium opened, his presence was felt within those walls, and especially within the Cardinals clubhouse where one of his early game-used jerseys hangs in his original Sportsman’s Park locker in a special display in the corner of the room. Photograph, which hung in the team’s front office, has a plaque crediting the picture to photographer Jack Zehrt. Exposed image is 23.5 x 23.5” and mounted within a white matted border surface under glass in a black frame sized to 31.5” x 31.5”. NRMT.
