Lot 1: Ty Cobb Farewell Tour Signed Baseball (One of the Last Baseballs Signed by Ty Cobb)
Splendid ball has the honor of bearing one of the Ty Cobb's last autographs in addition to those of 4 first-year L.A. Angels. Cobb, dying of cancer, underwent a "farewell tour" of baseball in 1960 and '61. He put his immortal marker on this OAL (Cronin) ball during an appearance at the FIRST EVER LOS ANGELES ANGELS HOME GAME at L.A.'s Wrigley Field on April 27, 1961. The 3 other readable signatures on the ball are Angels manager Bill Rigney and 3 Angels players, Steve Bilko, Ken Hamlin and Bob Cerv. Cobb died on July 17, 1961 at age 74. He signed the ball with the characteristic underlining of the name in blue ink on a side panel, grading a 6/10. All signatures are somewhat faded, with Cobb's a grade above the rest. Ball itself is G-VG with light soiling and small dings. Comes with the original red and yellow Reach Official AL baseball box, intact with a few rips.
