Lot 614: 1938 Baseball Who's Who Signed by 292 Different Players including Lou Gehrig
The Bible with God's signature in it? Maybe not, but close, is this staggering find -- a vintage 1938 "Who's Who in Baseball" signed by, sit down for this, 292 different big leaguers, with no less than 30 Hall of Famers! A '38 edition of the still-running baseball Bible is rare enough, but these signatures put this one in a whole other category. Biblical, you might say. The title page (in this case the cover page, as the original cover has been torn away) and many subsequent pages are filled with the signatures, most on their bios/pictures. The list of HOF signers in the book includes: Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Chuck Klein (x2), Bill Dickey, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Luke Appling, Ted Lyons, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Herb Pennock, Bucky Harris, Al Simmons, Rick Ferrell, John Mize, Bill Terry, Carl Hubbell (as Giants manager), Pie Traynor (as Pirate manager), Lloyd Waner, Joe Medwick, Frank Frisch (as Cards manager), Enos Slaughter, Al Lopez. In addition, there are signatures by AL President Will Harridge, Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey and seven umpires including HOFer Bill Klem. Hell, most everyone who put on a uniform in '38 is somewhere within these magical pages -- from Ripper Collins to Willard Hershberger to catcher/spy Moe Berg and numerous "cup of coffee" players whose autographs are seldom seen - an amazing treasure trove of signatures just waiting to be discovered. Book itself is G-VG and well-used through the years with darkening of the pages and soiling/foxing/edge serrating on the cover. Signatures, though, have held up remarkably well and average EX-MT/NRMT. Includes a listing of all the signers and where their signatures can be found in the book. A Bible signed by 30 gods? We never thought we'd live to see that.
