Lot 1421: Grover Cleveland Alexander Hall of Fame Plaque
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Original embroidered tribute to Grover Cleveland Alexander's entry into the Hall of Fame keeps it simple, the opposite of how the pitching great conducted his off-field life. Pummeled by epilepsy, and then alcoholism, he still managed to win a National League record 373 games. "Alexander" in red felt letters runs across white canvas in a semi-circle, and stitched words below read: "Grover Cleveland Alexander Hall of Fame 1939." The entire black-framed piece is 18 by 24 inches and is in EX+ shape. “Ol Pete," as Alexander was called, was hung over when he entered Game 7 of the 1926 World Series in relief and struck out the Yankees' Tony Lazzeri in one of the most dramatic at-bats in Series history. Alexander and his St. Louis Cardinals went on to win the championship. Commemoration gives Alexander his props for making it look easy on the mound despite a hard life. MLB hologram at bottom right ensures it's the real deal.
