Lot 650: Larry Lajoie Handwritten Letter to Hillerich and Bradsby

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,500.00
Winning Bid: $1,963.09
Price Realized: $2,345.89
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

An incredible handwritten letter from Hall of Famer Napoleon Lajoie -- the man who made the Cleveland Indians a valuable franchise in the early 20th Century -- to batmakers Hillerich and Bradsby, dated August 21, 1951, asking if they would please send him a "Lajoie bat model" so he can give it to "a great Base Ball Fan." What a contrast with today, when batmakers crawl on their hands and knees to keep the players under contract happy and well stocked with enough lumber to build a K-Mart. The letter is penned on Lajoie's stationary and signed boldly (9/10) "Larry Lajoie". NRMT condition with the typical mailing folds. Originates from the H&B archives.
