Lot 770: 1877 Alexander Cartwright Signed Receipt

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,000.00
Winning Bid: $1,439.60
Price Realized: $1,720.32
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST

Alexander Cartwright handwritten receipt containing his signature as part of the text. Besides being credited as the creative force behind baseball, Alexander Cartwright was also a successful lawyer, businessman, landowner, shipping merchant, Honolulu's first Fire Chief and an officer for the Royal Court for Hawaii's final King and Queen. Most collectors believe that Cartwright's handwriting is readily available, but almost all existing Cartwright material is actually in the form of letter-press copies or "onion skins." Cartwright died in 1892, and is the earliest deceased Hall of Famer beside William Hulbert, contributing to his being one of the toughest Hall of Fame autographs to obtain. Original examples of his handwriting are virtually non-existent, here's your chance at the real McCoy. Writing is NRMT. Page is NRMT but for one fold.
