While Topps toned down the colors of its 1964 baseball cards, it revved up the intensity in some of its football set. A red-hued George Blanda is framed in a yellow background and blue stars in his #68 (GEM MT PSA 10). It is vivid, interesting and perfect, and has held back time as well as Blanda did. The quarterback and kicker played a record 26 seasons and was pro football's all-time points leader at 2,002 when he retired. Extra points for the aqua blue reverse, even if it doesn't include season by season stats. A later Blanda card would barely have enough room. Topps gambled by issuing an AFL-only set while the NFL was king, figuring the upstart league's new television contract would give it the exposure it needed to spur sales.
