When sportswriter Grantland Rice called Notre Dame's 1924 backfield of Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley, Harry Stuhldreher and Don Miller "the Four Horsemen," he spawned a mini-industry of collectibles. One of the finest is Topps' #68 Four Horsemen card (NM-MT 8) from its 1955 All American set. Georgeous painted photo with green jerseys and gold helmets seizes the attention, giving it an artsy antique feel. Note how one foot steps over the black and white boundary to add dimension. There's a brief explanation of the Four Horsemen in shades of blue on the reverse. This card looks great "outlined against a blue-gray October sky," as Rice wrote in his 1924 story, or anywhere else.
