This collection of 8 superb real photo postcards capturing game action at Cleveland's League Park in 1911 were a sort of prehistoric version of "SportsCenter," bringing to the general public images of athletes in action rarely seen outside of the ballpark. Seeing Ty Cobb, for example, streak to first base must have been a real thrill -- and still is, given the historical significance of these cards. Many of the 3 x 5" sepia-toned postcards with handwritten IDs and captions on the back originate from Addie Joss Day, a charity game that attracted major leaguers from around the country played for the widow of Joss, a Hall of Fame Cleveland pitcher who died of tubercular meningitis at age 30. Terrific actioners of the likes of Larry Gardner, Jimmy Austin, Ping Bodie, etc., with lots of guys leaping, sliding and kicking up clouds of dust, and one dugout pose with George Stovall, Jim McAller, Hal Chase and Bobby Wallace that embodied the spirit of the day. Postcards are overall VG with some writing on the versos. None are postmarked.
