Lot 1359: Rare 1934 American All Stars Tour Program
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Program from the Philippines leg of the 1934 baseball goodwill tour of the Far East is one of the rarest pieces from the famous caravan led by Connie Mack and joined by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other future HOFers. The Philippines stop, with a 2-game set played at Jose Rizal Memorial Stadium on Dec. 9-10, is much more obscure than the Japan visit, and the 6 x 9" program in particular is nearly impossible to find. Pictured inside are all the stars, which also included Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehringer, Jimmie Foxx, etc. (one unheralded team member was Moe Berg, whom we know now was on a spy mission for the U.S. government), as well as the Philippine Olympic baseball team. Gray and red cover depicting a ball and illustrated game scene reads "American-Philippine Baseball Souvenir." The 52-page program, which belonged to Athletics 2B Harold Warstler, who played on the team, is VG with a small piece of the cover's lower right corner torn away and a tear near the upper left corner. Inside pages are tightly bound and just slightly browned.
