Lot 1561: 1936 Babe Ruth Spalding Bat Advertising Display

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $2,484.98

Spalding celebrates its 60th year in the sporting goods business with a 1936 bat display combining literacy, the Babe and pseudo-science. Intrigued? Bi-fold easel-backed cardboard standup (EX+) is in book form and the first line reads: "Here's one for the book!" Twenty-nine by 20 inches when completely unfolded, the piece fascinates with its customer manipulation. On one page, Spalding lists its accomplishments during the 1935 major league season with a silhouette that is obviously Babe Ruth but is not identified. Thus, the endorsement is inferred. On the other side, the ad touts Spalding's innovation of "safety grip dots," which treats the baseball axiom of keeping the trademark away from the hitting surface as a problem that needs to be remedied with instructional dots. Great gimmick and a great find. It stands on its own.
