Schoendienst came to the '51 Midsummer Classic in Detroit still wearing the glow of his 14th-inning, game-winning dinger that broke up the previous season's All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. One of the class acts of all-time, the HOF second baseman who hit .289 lifetime used this specially personalized Louisville Slugger during the NL's 8-3 victory at Briggs Stadium. The stick is a nifty memento as it is engraved, "All Star Game, Detroit-1951" along with his scripted signature "Al. Schoendienst," using his real first name Alfred. Bat has a few scattered nicks but it pretty much pristine and a great symbol of a guy who didn't let anything -- including an early-career eye injury and a late-career bout with tuberculosis that cost him half a lung -- keep him from trotting onto the field for the Cards, Giants and Braves and playing with fire. This greaty bat came right from Red himself.
