Lot 2001: Gary MacGregor WHA Indianapolis Racers Game Worn Jersey

Gary MacGregor was a journeyman center who was short of stature and long on mucking up his jersey. This game-worn jersey from his first stint with the Indianapolis Racers in 1976-77 features stick smears, puck and sweat stains, popped seams, a hole and that old speeding skate for a logo on the front of the Wilson polyester size 48. Hard to believe that even Wayne Gretzky wore the Racers' logo for a blink of an eye. But MacGregor, who had five assists in 16 games, had to do far more dirty work than the Great One ever did, and it shows. He even had to take another's jersey -- his nameplate was sewn over somebody else's. Maybe they saved this one for him in his final stint with the team -- when it folded. Red, white and blue design still stirs the heart of WHA romantics the world over.
