The San Francisco Giants' proof sheet for the 1967 Topps disc set is a true original. The silver sheet contains 24 templates of 2 1/4 diameter discs for flipping and trading. Willie Mays, Juan Marichal and Willie McCovey are among the big names, but a few photo-less orbs carried bumper-sticker-like designs and slogans like "I Love the Giants" and "Happiness is Being a Giants Fan." Orange, yellow and red proofs against silver cardboard are somewhat of a production mystery. The Giants' set reflected a regional marketing push by Topps but these never made it to retail. There was speculation that the card company ran into trouble with the players' union for re-using the players' likeness. Whatever the cause, 14 1/2 by 20-inch (EX) sheet provides a fascinating glimpse back into the inner-workings of the trading card giant.
