Many publishing companies tried to get Jackie to write his autobiography, and this 2nd and last page of a Macmillan contract dated February 27, 1967 and signed by Jackie on March 2nd seemed to be a feather in editor Peter Ritner's cap. However, for reasons unknown, Jackie nixed the deal and would not pen his memoirs until 1972 when he wrote the best-selling "I Never Had It Made" for GP Putnam's Sons, telling of living in "a different kind of slavery than the kind Mr. Lincoln struck down."
